A male friend broke into my flat and broke my arm....?

It was over a silly dispute over a hoover. Cutting a long story short he wanted his hoover back and I wasn't around to let him in. So he came over (he lives over an hour away by car) and started banging and hollering abuse at me through my door, then when I opened the door (I have a chain lock) he burst through banging me in the head and arm and pushed me against the wall and shouted in my face. He did a lot of damage to my flat and my arm but when I called the police they didn't take anything seriously because 'nothing actually happened'. He is now sending me texts calling me a liar and blaming me for his behaviour and that I deserved it. He is also writing to my friends saying the same. I am so furious that he doesn't even think he has done anything wrong!!!!!! I am constantly scared and am alone because my friends believe him...what can I do??
